Life can be so wonderful. This time last week I was in the theater listening and watching the mets new production of the Merry Widow with Renee Fleming. An unbelievably beautiful production in every way. I was graphically reminded of Dr. Karps (he was one of my undergraduate professors and director of the Pittsburgh Opera Company when I sang with them from 1967 through 1978) explanation of the opera, that opera was the culmination of all of the arts--music, set design, costumes, and dance. The Merry Widow transports and envelopes the audience through all of the arts. This week, I was invited to go to Washington DC to attend the kickoff meeting of the second NLCSD new collaborative agreement with Salus University and the Office of Special Education Program. Among the University members were five new professors who had a been recipients of funding through NCLVI or the first NLCSD. Life doesnt get better than seeing the fruits of your (and many others) labor realized through new leadership for the field of blindness/VI, deafness/HH, and Deafblindness. Brooke Smith who worked closely with me in the early years did a great job facilitating the meeting along with Heather Herbster. Sadly John Killoran was not able to be there. Many prior consortium members were there along with new members representing their Universities. OSEP staff and administrators were there to support and guide the effort, particularly Glinda Foster Hill. Audrey Smith, my partner in crime in conceptualizing the model was also there. Now on the way home I listen to Carl Orfs Carmina Burana which I will see and hear in concert tomorrow with friends Susan Jay Spungin an. Life is rich with music, friends, colleagues, art and joy that elevates out lives....I am so very fortunate.
