Life is food. No, wait. Life is good; curse you, spell check. The vacation that almost wasn’t is back on, and we have Facebook to thank for it. For some time now, Andrea has been saying our collie-trod hardwood floors need to be refinished. To which I replied, “We have hardwood floors?” After considerable online research, she found a local company, whose principal came over in April, said we needed a pretty major job and much of it would have to be done by hand, but that he and his employees were, bar none, the best to do it. We arranged for him and his to be here the first full week of August, booked a hotel downtown that will let us bring the dogs and put in for time off from work. With Aug. 5 rapidly approaching, Andrea called and left a message with the flooring guy, saying we needed to know about our end of preparations and to see to it he had a key and an alarm code. He called back and left a message in which he pretended that we had the wrong week and that we had somehow been indicated he was scheduled for the tail end of July. That was the last we ever heard from him. With less than two weeks to go, I began calling and leaving messages several times a day, to no avail. One time I got a full mailbox message, but later was again able to leave messages. I tried calling from different numbers, and even tried another number listed on the website. Whoever answered, and it sounded like our guy, said I had the wrong number. Last week, Andrea posted a notice on Facebook that all indications are we were getting shafted, and while I couldn’t cancel my vacation she was probably only going to take a few days off because there’s a crush of work to be done. We were going to have to cancel the reservations. Damn! But then she got a message from our neighbor YaYa, who has painted our house inside and out, and is a good friend. It turns out HE does floor refinishing. When he came over, he said we didn’t need nearly as extensive a job as the other guy said, and that he could do it. Gave us a nice price, too. So on Sunday we’re going to the hotel, and we’ll get to have our staycation, after all.
