Life’s Marathon I run through the world at light - TopicsExpress

Life’s Marathon I run through the world at light speed, Tripping over the laces of my making, Seeing everything, but feeling nothing. Naked, I was flung out to start the race With no cannon fire or smoke, Only blinding light and burning curiosity To greet my pale and shivering form. The race had begun. I crawled the first leg of the marathon, My knees were Michelins’ That burned rubber over the carpet Leaving skid marks showing where I had been With my arms I steered toward uncertainty The piston in my chest drove me forward Pausing for fuel when the tank was empty, A pit stop to pump fuel from an unleaded tit. Never slowing down Picking up speed as my chassis grew longer My feet became Firestones’ That scorched the Earth as I swept by In a world of flashes and shadows Until the signposts could no longer be seen From my rearview mirror Sweeping past other racers who were Nothing but a blur. Some kept pace, Occasionally grinding me into the wall Colliding with my sensibility Drafting ahead by hanging onto coattails While others spun out and fell behind Leaving pieces of themselves on the track For others to hurdle over. Faster and faster I ran Trying desperately to reach the front of the pack Gears grinding and engine red-lining My feet never touched the ground Mercury burning in my blood, Wings on my feet Accelerating to breakneck speed Until I realized I have been on this track before. The oval continued on until eternity I was going in circles Seeing everything, but feeling nothing Traveling at the speed of light Tripping over the laces of my own making.
