Light A Candle For All Victims, Theirs & Ours Commit Again To Ending All Wars, Ours & Theirs by Grahame Russell On Veterans Day across the United States, Remembrance Day across Canada, cities and towns are filled with fluttering flags. Parades wind solemnly to cemeteries. The media provides full-on reporting about American and Canadian families who have lost loved ones in wars and interventions across the planet, who now care for wounded loved ones returned from wars and interventions across the planet. In our remembering and sadness, and in our honoring of our dead and wounded, we implicitly if not explicitly justify and re-justify our wars and interventions. We condemn and lament the killing and suffering they did to us, justifying and re-justifying the killing and suffering we did to them. The real story of war is no story at all. Blackness, sadness, silence. If I describe what I saw of the war, youll know it from the point of view of the living, and that is the smallest part of the truth. The truth itself is what was finally apprehended by those who didnt come back. (A Soldier of the Great War. by Mark Helprin) In our remembering, sadness and honoring of our dead and wounded, we implicitly if not explicitly state and re-iterate that we were right and good to go to war against them, that they were wrong and bad to fight against us. This takes us no closer to our common humanity, inside and across borders, north-south-east-west, no closer to our common life-fullness and mortality. Today, I light a candle for all soldiers killed and wounded, theirs and ours; all civilian victims, them and us; all surviving family members and loved ones, us and them. By the light of a candle, I dedicate myself again to live and work to end all wars and repression, all acts of political aggression and domination, ours and theirs. I dedicate myself again to another world is possible. No more us and them, No more good guys and bad guys, One planet, one life, one people.
