Lightening Ridge a true Wild West outback town,each July the world finds its way to the Opal festival. I became hooked on Opal 5 years ago and bought a mining claim with a 3 bedroom Humpy ,No modern conveniences you are back in the 19th C,Oil lamps and Camp fires every body becomes welcome and sometimes 10 people crash here,Bullshit around the camp fire beneath an amazing Ausi star spangled sky.Lords and larrikins mix the Yarn .We have been selling well and Amazingly I repatriated a Canadian Brooch to a Canadian which I purchased in Vancouver last year like selling coal to Newcastle or Ice to the Eskimos .The run from the mountains is 7hours and as we left work at 2 pm the drive would be problematic as Darkness comes at 6pm that means 3 hours + in Darkness the roads are littered with road kill and the Roos are in plague proportion. After Gilgandra Russian roulette prevailed dodging Hundreds of Roos but after Walgett our luck runs out A huge Pig ran straight across our path and I expected serious impact damage ,Bang as he hit our Roo bar and bump bump under the chassis of our truck impossible to avoid.On inspection Minimal Damage ,Amazing the crew shouted me down When I suggested taking the pig to our camp for a BBQ 100 pounds of pork left to the Dingoes .
