Special Guest Speaker on the Twin Primes Conjecture At Palomar, - TopicsExpress

Special Guest Speaker on the Twin Primes Conjecture At Palomar, please join professors from the Math Department for a special Event on Friday, October 18 from 2:00-3:30 pm in NS-138, preceded by refreshments in NS-147 at 1:30. This spring, a lecturer at the University of New Hampshire made a significant advancement in the search for a proof of the centuries-old Twin Primes Conjecture, which asserts that there are infinitely many pairs of prime numbers that differ by two, such as 3 & 5 and 11 & 13. His accomplishment has been heralded by the mathematical community and the popular media. He has been featured in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, NPR, and even AARP! Not only is this story a mathematical marvel, but a terrific human interest story of a man who worked at a Subway sandwich shop making ends meet while trying to land an academic position. Even though employed as a lecturer and not a tenure-track professor, he continued to research this fascinating topic. On Friday, October 18, Dr. David Lesley, Professor of Mathematics Emeritus and former Chair of the Department of Mathematics at SDSU will present a talk for us on the background and recent developments of this emerging story.
