Like all right-thinking folk I love Daft Punk very much. And as such I bought, and thoroughly enjoyed Interstella 5555, not only because it is by far the least worryingly pro-imperial-Japan film in Leiji Matsumotos catalog, but because it is a feature length anime Daft Punk music video, please and thank you. Problem is that by about 3 songs in, Discovery kind of stops being good. The tracks go from wow, what an inventive mashup of sampled cuts and original vocals to hey, this is just (insert song title here) with some dude singing new words. Even the band themselves kind of acknowledged this in their tours, the album Alive 2007 stars as its centerpiece an epically long and thoroughly remixed version of Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (which wasnt even the biggest culprit to begin with). This makes me wonder if we will ever see a cut of Interstella 5555 where the quality of all the music matches the effort that went into the animation. I seriously doubt it, because as we all know Daft Punk now spend all their time composing catchy ditties for street performers and making otherwise shit-terrible Disney films barely watchable. But I can DREAM, damn it.
