Like many, I am genuinely saddened by what is happening in Ferguson, Missouri. Clearly, we are not home yet. We live in a fallen world where racism exists even if the situation in Missouri turns out not to be such a case. That being said, I do not believe racism exists on the level that many people want to project it as existing. I don’t come to the table uninformed on this subject and I certainly reject one of the buzz words being thrown around by “race baiters” which is the idea of “White Privilege”. Here was my “White Privilege” growing up on the north side of Ft. Smith for several years. 1) I spent my early years in Allied Gardens, an apartment complex that was filled with Latinos, Vietnamese, Blacks and Whites. When looked at collectively, Whites were in the minority. 2) My best friend was a Black kid named Herman Sims. Loved that guy. I practically lived at his house. 3) I was routinely called “Whitey” and “Honkey” by some of the Blacks in the apartment complex. 4) In response to being “picked on” (some may choose to call it racism), I got into a lot of fights. I care not to discuss my win/loss record. 5) I lived in a single parent home for 10 years without a Father, who was a drunk at the time and when he visited our home it was an abusive situation for my Mother and us children. (I’ll spare you the details). 6) My Mother worked like a rented mule to provide for 4 children. So, if that’s “White Privilege”, so be it, because that was my experience. I’m certain that’s not what people mean when they throw around the term, however. In fact, the only sort of privilege I have experienced in this life is the “Jesus privilege”. He saved a wretch like me. He is still the only lasting answer to all of life’s questions. Prayers for everyone involved in Ferguson. Even so Lord Jesus, come.
