Like many of you, I was shocked to hear about the death of Robin - TopicsExpress

Like many of you, I was shocked to hear about the death of Robin Williams. I was even more surprised to learn that this tragedy was the result of a suicide. Robin Williams brought joy and laughter to so many people. Some of my favorite of his films were Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, and What Dreams May Come. They make me laugh and cry. So, it has angered me to see so many people post on social media that Robin Williams is in Hell because he committed suicide. The Catholic Church does NOT teach that those who take their own lives go straight to Hell. Now, this is not to undermine the fact that suicide is wrong. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) states, We are the stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of (2280). Neverthless, we must not despair for people like Robin Williams; a man who by all accounts suffered from severe depression throughout his life. The CCC states, Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide (2282). Furthermore, By ways known to Him alone, God can provide the opportunity of salutary repentance (2283). So, tonight, pray for Robin Williams and all those who are contemplating suicide. If you ever find yourself thinking about suicide, please get help right away. The Youth Ministry team is always just a phone call away. God bless you, Robin Williams, and God bless you all! -Johnny
