Like many of you, my husband and I are in the thick of the college experience. Not going to college, but rather PAYING for college. Like many of your kids, mine are busy wondering which major will suit their talents best. English or Anthropology? Philosophy or Film? Womens Studies or American Studies? And like many of you, I find myself reflexively (albeit silently) engaging in the age-old lament of Jewish Mothers throughout history, Why not a Doctor? Or an engineer? Or a computer scientist? Or something - anything - that might actually result in employment in this terrifying, changing world? Along comes Michael Roth, the President of Wesleyan University, where our daughter Sophie is a freshman, with an answer to my anxiety-laced prayers, though not the one my neuroses (or my Bubbe) would seem to demand. His new book, Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters, is here to remind us why weve been saving our dollars in college funds since our children were born.
