Like most people, I want to go with the flow, the consensus; but sometimes it is sinful not to speak out. When you listen to the news, regarding the events unfolding in the Ukraine there are some facts that you should bare in mind before reaching a conclusion: 1.) The democratically elected government of the Ukraine was overthrown by masked bandits, not the people. 2.) This government was elected with votes from all the main ethnic groups that make up the Ukraine. And at no time before or since the crisis began has anyone questioned its legitimacy. 3.) Both the Europeans and the Russians were trying to tempt the Ukrainian government with huge trade deals. Ukraine could only accept one of them. Both Europe and Russia stated that the outcome of the Ukraines decision would have wider ramifications. Essentially determining if it was to have a Western or Eastern political and cultural outlook for at least the next generation. 4.) The bandits that toppled the government were pro-Western. This is undoubtedly the most important factor to consider when you are listening to the Western news reports. They toppled the democratic government because it accepted the Russian trade deal over the European offer. 5.) The Russian armed forces were always in the Crimea, it was formally part of the USSR and successive Ukrainian governments have signed deals allowing the Russian military to station troops there, including the Russian Black Sea fleet. The present agreement is in place until 2042. - The US has thousands of troops in the Philippines under an agreement reached with the Philippine government, the same principle is at play here. 6.) Nearly half (figures vary between 35% to 60%) of Ukrainians are ethnic Russians. In the Crimea they make up the vast majority of the population.
