Listen to a story of exquisite beauty, Like the unfolding of a soulful mystery, Long ago lived a small boy in South of India, Who was congenitally deaf and mute of all, Later as He grew up to be a young boy, His friends and foes teased him alike, He became very distracted and aloof, As he wandered through the lanes of old Kanchi, He saw a magnificent temple of Goddess Kamakshi, Steeped in the traditions of ancient Shakaracharyas, She sits there on an invisible Shiva, as if She didnt care, The boy Mooka (Deaf & Dumb) as he was called by all, Entered this hallowed temple in all piety, As his eyes fell on the sitting goddess, A deep sigh escaped His tender lips, His gut became wrenched in anguish, Not because He was born mute and deaf, But because He couldnt even praise Kamakshi, The beautiful Mother heard the boys silent plea, And a strange buzzing sound filled his ears suddenly, The confused boy didnt know what was happening, Even as the sound in his ears began to increase, When it became unbearable He uttered AAAA, Only to be followed by a long burst of UUUU, Ending in a strange climax of MMMM, When the three sounds joined together, That was the birth of AUM in Him, That moment on He became someone no one could imagine, A poet par excellence where words flowed through him effortlessly, In that spur of the moment He praised Kanchi Kamakshi, With an ode of 500 of the most beautiful & soulful shlokas, Called Mooka Pancha Shati, earning Him the name of Mooka Kavi, This is a true story, of an impaired boy, who was born mute, But regained the power of speech miraculously & mastered it, All through the grace of the goddess of Kanchi, And as an ultimate benediction of Goddess Kamakshi, She made him the Pontiff Supreme of the Mutt of Kamakoti,
