Listening to old Genesis music lately. I wanted to make a comment about Phil Collins. There’s this thing that happens in really great movies where the scene and music create a perfect moment and you can’t help your emotional response. It’s intentional certainly, but in the earlier movies where this occurred, there was a sincerity to it that made those moments incredibly powerful. In modern movies you see this technique applied and while sometimes it will make your eye’s water, it still feels cliché. Most Phil Collins fans know him from the 80’s, but when he started singing for Genesis in the 70’s after Peter Gabriel left the band, there was this fantastic purity to his vocals that I can’t explain exactly, but it’s like he had the sonic master key that opened your soul up and made you feel exposed the way you do when you decide you are going to open your heart to someone one and you feel that emotional rush as feeling fill up your entire being. His singing inspired me not only musically but emotionally. As I listen to some of the old music, I think about how life often creates replicas of the original with some degree of degradation. Without something to compare it to, you think the new thing is somehow the best there ever was. My sister Monique Calello mentioned just yesterday a discussion of how Justin Timberlake is the new Frank Sinatra. Perhaps on some level, singing/acting + fame and pop culture you could compare them, but from and emotional perspective, Timberlake has never touched Sinatra. I always thought Chris Martin from Coldplay is a powerfully emotional singer and I’d listen often with a similar respect to his ability to touch emotions with just the sound of his voice, but I have to say, listening to old Phil Collins, just make Chris Martin seem almost 2 dimensional.
