Listening to the consultation on the social adjustment program - TopicsExpress

Listening to the consultation on the social adjustment program facilitated by the social partners it seems that no two economists on the island can agree to anything as it relates to the way forward. Ego takes precedence over substance. There are a number of economist on island , what is preventing these economists from sitting down together around a table and coming up with a serious long term economic plan for Grenada , Carriacou and Petite Martinique. What all the panelist failed to address is the serious issue of the political division within the country. Senator De Allie mentioned that Grenadians are lazy . This may or may not be so but the politics is a major problem. For there to be economic growth and sustainability development the people should be integrally involve in a united way. Until and unless people are employed base on merit and skill set all these consultation will be futile. When government just replace one set of workers with party supporters the net result is inefficiency. The politicians primary concern is to elected or re-elected into office and so their plans and programs for the economy are design around getting votes every five years. The rum and corn beef politics keep the poor people poor and un -productive. The issue of hand out has taken a new level with even the middle class and rich businessmen having that mentality. One good thing about the consultation is that the TUC, Conference of Churches , Private Sector and Government can air their views on the way forward as it relates to the economic problems facing the country The missing link in all these consultation is the absence of a voice for the 22,000 plus citizens who voted for the National Democratic Congress, NDC. These people didnt vote for the TUC , Conference of Churches or the Private Sector. I am also a believer in the separation of powers and that include the separation of politics and religion. Politics should be guided by one religious belief but not directed by that belief. Hope that these consultation will be fruitful for the benefit of national development.
