Lit crit often focuses on the text, but the text is only realized when someone reads it. Readers read for varied reasons, and writers need to be aware of those reasons in order to reach readers more effectively (and, perhaps, understand why they arent reaching the readers they want). Here are some reasons readers read (and they are by no means mutually exclusive): to Escape, to Learn, for the Comfort of Ritual, for an Aesthetic Experience, to Stimulate Imagination, for Identification, for Catharsis, for a Cultural Event. Can you think of any others? What reasons are most important to you?
