Live from the French Riviera this summer, EMU College of Business IMC advertising students were honored to be specially selected as VIP staff interns working behind the scenes at the most prestigious creative event in the world. Cannes Lions is the worlds biggest celebration of creativity in communications and the London organizers relied on EMU Professor Dr. Sheila Sasser to bring her very best students again this year, in what has become a tradition since she attended in 2008 and offered to help out. Benchmarking innovation in anything from mobile and billboards to design and branded content, it’s the home of great global ideas changing the ways brands interact with their customers. Cannes Lions Awards champion the best work from around the entire world over the past year and the Festival’s inspirational learning program points the way forward. A unique mystique, Cannes Lions is the only truly global meeting place for professionals working in creative communications, from creatives and marketers to technologists and media specialists. Over a one week period, Cannes Lions is where 12,000 people from 94 countries come together to be inspired by seven incredible days of learning, networking and celebration and it was actually 10 days this year with the new Healthcare Lions Awards starting on Friday, before the festival opening. It is SXSW on steroids on the Cote dAzur, right after the film festival, complete with working paparazzi and star power. EMU IMC advertising intern students Patrick Cotter, Nicole Martin, Marle Reimert, and Jillian Henning were the lucky attendees who enjoyed the Cannes Lions Creativity Festival in France this June, as they worked behind the scenes with media moguls, legends, musicians, stars and celebrities. The American Advertising Federation Student Advertising Association EMU Chapter members worked with Faculty Advisor Mentor Dr. Sheila Sasser and the festival organizers on a variety of VIP staff activities in marketing, event management, sponsorship, and logistics. Networking with reporters from Ad Age, creative directors, music stars, and media people is quite an eye opener for EMU students, who actually saw Bono backstage, Rob Lowe, Sara Jessica Parker, Sir Patrick Stewart, Jared Leto, Dr Neil Degrasse Tyson along with P&G, Unilever, Twitter and others It was fairly easy in this atmosphere to gather a few business contacts for future job hunting reference anywhere in the world. Thankfully, the Yessian Music Pixomondo Annual Villa Pool Party event provided a brief break from the star struck conference Palais Grand Auditorium for fun in the sun, along with the Google beach event, Youtube, and other diversions. Since Cannes Lions attracts 12,000 of the worlds top advertising, media, technology, social, film, music and marketing jet setters from 94 countries, it is an Innovative Incubator. Students were able to participate in all day seminars, award ceremonies, workshops, and gala events in the South of France on a VIP level. It is a unique international internship experience that provides a glimpse of the French Riviera lifestyle and access to the hottest jobs in the world, in a multi-cultural setting. During breaks, students visited their favorite new French restaurants, experienced the ancient medieval village, sampled the farmers market items, indulged in a bit of shopping, yacht hopped in the marina, and made some excursions to Grasse Parfumerie Fragonard. CANNES LIONS CREATIVITY FESTIVAL IS 60 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN INSPIRING CREATIVITY SINCE 1954, EMU AD CLUB STUDENTS HAVE BEEN INTERNS SINCE 2011 WHEN THEY ASKED DR. SASSER IF THEY COULD COME TO CANNES LIONS WITH HER TO EXPERIENCE IT!
