Liver disease is a cruel and insidious demon. See, its not just the liver that gets sick although that is plenty bad enough to kill you. The spleen, gall bladder, small intestines get angry and swell up and get sick. Then there is the medicine you have to take to manage the beast. The diuretics start to ruin your kidneys so dialysis is the next step. Your skin and eyes take on a yellow hue. And since your liver can no longer process the natural occurring toxins in your body, you have to take medicine that gives you unpredictable bowel problems all to prevent a coma and death. Then theres the pain...in your chest, in your guts, in your sides and back. The dietary restrictions on protein and fluids and red meat and raw fish...bye bye oysters on the half shell and raw vegetables...even eating out can result in a hospitalization because some idiot in the kitchen has Hepatitis A or B. Then the transplant, if you can make it to that point, necessitates that another persons loved one dies. Its an endless roller coaster of a few good days and a lot of bad ones , tests and blood work and IVs until youre so bruised you look like a pin cushion. The suffering I have witnessed my husband go through has broken my heart a thousand times over and the journey continues. Please be kind to your liver...you dont want to go through this and you dont want to see your loved ones go through it either.
