Liverpool owner John W Henry promises Anfield redevelopment won’t mean cutbacks to the transfer budget Liverpool’s principal owner John W Henry is adamant a £150million redevelopment of Anfield will not hinder Brendan Rodgers’ future moves in the transfer market. Work planned for the main stand and Anfield Road End will take the capacity at the famous ground to around 60,000. But Henry insisted manager Brendan Rodgers will not have his hands tied in the transfer market because funds to buy players will be ploughed into the development. He said of the improvements: ‘It won’t impact because it will pay for itself. It’s actually a positive. It’s one of the reasons we are doing it. It still provides excess cash for the manager.’ Liverpool City Council and other groups have been working alongside the football club to make sure the development goes smoothly and Henry added: ‘We are all on the same page.’ Previous owner Tom Hicks and George Gillett planned to build a new ground next to Anfield but struggled to raise the cash and Henry said: ‘When this [redevelopment] happens, that won’t be the problem. ‘They were talking about going out and borrowing an enormous amount of money for an enormous facility. That’s not what we are doing here. ‘One of their problems is they weren’t able to get financing. We are making good progress. ‘We have a lot of different groups working very well together and that’s the key to a big project like this happening. This is the direction that makes financial sense for the club in the long term.’
