Living in and around inner cities/violent neighborhoods my whole life has made me privy to some shit...Without going too deep, Ive been involved in and/or witnessed far more extreme situations and run-ins with the law than what these kids allegedly did to deserve to die and no one was fatally wounded. The situations we were in as kids were NEVER handled with such haste and recklessness! You may say well, thats because youre white and I would immediately show you a photo album of my closest friends/family-most of which were with me during said instances- and you may as quickly change your tune. You may say If you werent there would those situations have been different? Who Knows. But trust me when I tell you, we were no saints and probably did far more to deserve extreme force than ANY of these folks. Something has changed, dramatically. When I was growing, up I knew (all my homies knew...by first name usually) some BAD ASS Cops...and by bad ass I mean very good at their jobs and could handle damn near any situation with tact and honor for what their badge represented. Kick ass cops. The ones that risked their life everyday to protect the citizens of their city. The ones that could diffuse a potentially dangerous situation with excellent police work and NOT A BULLET. The ones that looked at fatally killing a human being as the absolute LAST resort. Now, like every other kid in our environment, we hated seeing their lights, loathed being stopped and harassed over and over and would run at the drop of a dime when we seen em comin ...However, as much we despised them, we never thought they would just pull out their side arm and shoot us dead. It happened but it was pretty damn rare. Look, we all knew a shady cop and have witnessed or been the victim of some extra bullsh*t with 5-0 but theres something very frightening about these recent events. The panic displayed by these officers, the disregard for human life (body in the street for 6 hrs dude?? wtf!), the borderline militant us against them mentality thats been deployed...Its madness in a bottle really. A shameful stain has been left and no bleach will remove it. Im sure you can agree that as a young kid Cops were the hero type. The pillars of decency if you will. The sanity in an often misaligned world. They were the ones you would turn to if the bad men were coming. Now what have they become? The bad men they were sworn to protect you from? I ask that question honestly as I really dont know anymore. You may say something like a few bad Cops dont mean theyre all bad and I would say, very true!...and a few bad kids in a neighborhood doesnt make everyone there a criminal and the color of your skin or socio-economic background doesnt make you f*cking target practice!. In that same breath, having a mental disorder (clinically diagnosed) and officers not trained in dealing with such situations does not merit an all out tactical assault resulting in the death of an innocent man as his family (who called the police for HELP) stood helplessly outside while their/son brother was being flashed banged and riddled with assault rifles (RIP ERROL CHANG). Oscar was f*cking hogtied when he was fatally shot! The man who shot him was TRAINED to handle that weapon for years and he made a mistake on what weapon he discharged?!?! Naw bruh, naw! And people arent supposed to be outraged? We should ALL be outraged. If a mechanic who is highly trained in making sure that your breaks dont fail mistakes your brake lines for your gas lines and you go careening off a cliff youre not gonna be outraged? Oscar could very well have been your son. Errol could have been your brother. Mike could have been your grandson...You see where Im going with this. One of these instances is too many and should be viewed as such by us a country wide community. Trust me, I worked pretty hard to try and ditch my f*ck the police demeanor but these recent events and the events that have personally effected me, my friends, my neighborhoods and the constitutionally free citizens of this nation are making me want to dust of my Dead Prez CD. JAH.
