What this adds up to, then, is this: no more lies, no more pretense. —EPHESIANS 4:22-25, MSG As a teenager, Daniel Taylor asked a speaker at a Christian camp about a moral issue that was bothering him. Instead of pointing out what was right and wrong, the speaker said, You need to decide at what plane you are going to live your life. The words had a great impact on the teenager. Now he asks himself and his children, On what plane are you going to live your life?… Are you going to waver here, rationalize there, indulge yourself in this, temporarily suspend your convictions over that? Dishonesty is one of the most subtle forms of unloving behavior. How many of us have told small lies to rationalize our behavior? How many of us make daily compromises instead of acting on and speaking the whole truth? Taylor concludes, The real world is Gods world, not the poor, perverted imitation world with which most people are satisfied. To live as fully as possible in that real world, you have to decide if you want to live on that high plane. Every time we speak truth when it seems easier to lie, we come more fully alive in Christ. We show that no matter what is acceptable in our society, we want to make a choice that is far more satisfying than anything a deceptive world can offer.
