Living in the “now” Recently I had a conversation with a religious sister who is a good friend of mine who was quite worried about the future of the church and of our country. In speaking to her I remembered Fr. Richard Rhor’s book about ‘living in the now’. Also as I hear confessions so often I have persons who cannot get over what they have done or what has happened to them in the past. To those persons I often say that God’s forgiveness is given to us so that we can let go of the past. We are to also forgive others for the same reason. Yes, we can benefit from what we have learned in the past but not live in the past. We are free from it through forgiveness. In the same way, I also can prepare for the future, or reach out toward the future with hope. But we should not live in the future as if in a dream. We hear Jesus speaking about this in the gospels. So live in the present. When you do, be open to all that is good, and beautiful and life giving. Give yourself to the present with your mind, see and know what is right before you. Give yourself to the present with your heart, love what is right here in your life. And give yourself to the present with your strength – do all you can to make this moment good for everyone. Let both the past and the future be in God’s hands. Father Ignatius DeGroot, Pastor
