Living right at Sydneys Gay and Lesbian District (Oxford Street, - TopicsExpress

Living right at Sydneys Gay and Lesbian District (Oxford Street, Darlinghurst) has caused me to meet some incredibly flamboyant and fun characters! BUT its also caused me to meet ABSOLUTELY NORMAL, well-groomed, 40-something-year old businessmen who have full-time jobs, pay their taxes, live respectful lives, and are madly in love with another man. Today in the elevator, I spoke to two men who also live in my building. They had just returned home from a romantic holiday together and were preparing to go back to work. They told me they had been together for nearly 12 years and on their holiday they had a wedding ceremony, however, it wouldnt be recognised as a legal union in Australia. I said goodbye and got out of the elevator and it really got me thinking.. Im always so shocked that gay marriage is such a big deal. You have to realise how precious human life is, when there are tsunamis, bushfires, floods, landslides, hijacked planes, when there are wars and terrorism - at any moment, you could be gone, and potentially in the most brutal fashion. And then you have to realise that LOVE is truly one of the most extraordinary things you can experience in your life. And to resent someone elses love for another person because of gender seems absolutely absurd. Its based in fear, fear of what is not like you. But when you are able to view it simply as PEOPLE in LOVE living their life on a day-to-day basis, you humanize a whole community. Personally, I think its time Australia joined the rest of the world and allowed these PEOPLE in LOVE to be equal.
