It did not begin with this Pope and personally, its a breath of fresh air to have a humanist Pope speaking in egalitarian terms after his nazi predecessor. Politically, I am also grateful that a world leader who has the power to sway hundreds of millions is saying the things this Pope is saying. Is that because Im vesting his words with more value than I would a commoners? No. Its a pragmatic recognition of the power of this one mans position and personal appeal. I think its short-sighted to ignore that power since the people who listen to him come from a thousand spots on the political spectrum. Did the Bishops install him because, like the Republican Party, they realized they needed to change the message and the messenger? Probably. But to simply dismiss this particular man is foolish.
