Loadshedding is a consequence of a flailing infrastructure not a strategy to take into the future. Most of the South of Johannesburg including Glenvista, Mulbarton, Liefde-en-Vrede, Bassonia, Glenanda, Mondeor, Winchester Hills, Linmeyer expected to be affected by loadshedding tonight 18h00 - 22h30 according to the City Power schedule. They dont always stick to the schedule though......In my experience the only thing City Power do reliably is send me a bill. On that issue I have a fundamental objection that a municipality can charge a mark up to the consumer from the price it purchases electricity from Eskom (conveniently the price of electricity markup by municipalities is not regulated by NERSA) but that is a discussion for another day. This is the worst electricity crisis in SA since 2008 - in fact according to Eskom if not carefully managed the national grid may collapse altogether and take weeks to restart according to Andrew Etzinger Eskom spokesperson. Eskom capacity expansion has been delayed by 4 years mostly due to management uncertainty and delays at the new Madupi power station under construction at the hands labour action (or inaction) and other delays. The state of affairs certainly has had an effect on the Rand which this week devalued against the dollar on the back of investor concerns over Eskoms inability to meet demand in December (which traditionally draws less current than the rest of the year). There does not seem to be any national intervention strategy. Eskom is in crisis. The country may be in crisis. One of the biggest challenges facing the country is to grow the economy at a rate capable to meet the national expenditure requirements to fund the governments projects, programmes and commitments. The economy has been growing at little over 2% per annum - generally accepted to be insufficient. Its difficult to see how the economy can grow under these difficult circumstances, not to mention a volatile labour sector, high taxation rates and a political indulgence to foreign nationals. Every time the lights go out and the gentle hum of generators imbues the suburb I cannot help but think that SA is being left behind....... Be Safe - GV3
