Local News Briefs - January 17, 2014 (Bangor) – Flooding fears have prompted police and public works officials in Bangor to put the Kenduskeag Plaza off limits today. (Stonington) The Stonington Water Company might be on to what’s part of the cause of loss of millions of gallons of water on a regular basis. The Island Advantages reports the culprit could be old meters. Olver Associates took over operation of the company in the Spring and has slowly tested and replaced meters in homes. The company told Stonington’s Selectmen some of those meters are sluggish or stopped and that means a lot of water wasn’t being measured. (Bar Harbor) – The school budget for Mt. Desert Island High School is relying more on property taxes and less on tuition from off island students. The Mt. (Blue Hill) The “new” roof on Blue Hill’s Consolidated school library leaked water during heavy rains earlier this month. The Weekly Packet reports the roof is just over 3 years old and was installed by Williams Roofing Company of Brewer. The school’s building and grounds supervisor says the roof has multiple issues and he doesn’t know why it’s started to leak through the skylights. (Stonington) Stonington’s municipal budget is up about 7.5 percent which accounts for a just over 105 thousand dollar increase. The Island Advantages reports selectmen approved the 1.5 million dollar budget earlier this week. (Lamoine) Lamoine’s newly elected school board has gotten right to work and they will seek input from the community for the next steps in Lamoine Consolidated School’s future. A community forum will be held the last Tuesday of the month in the school’s cafeteria. The board says they hope to hear what works and what needs improvement in the formation of a new school district.
