Local friends, when I was at the shelter today I met a lovely young woman who moved to our town recently. She has just gotten an apartment and paid all the utility deposits, so money is kind of tight. But she needed a dog! She has had some training as a vet tech or something veterinary related. Anyway, she was there adopting a darling mid-size fuzzy mutt with a big sore on her forehead--and she (the dog) threw up while she was in the process. She wanted to take her to the closest vet, which would be Animal Hospital on Downing Pines, so I led her over there. She was pretty sure the baby has parvo--could tell from the smell of the puke. The vet confirmed parvo--and they are keeping her until Friday. This sweet young womans plan is to treat her at home, keeping plenty of Pedialyte and such on hand, and pull her through if possible. I know shes facing major bills. She said the vet agreed to work with her on a payment plan.
