Located at 210 4th Avenue North, the historic Climax Saloon was acquired in 1887 by the partners of the George A. Dickel & Company as the primary outlet for their Cascade brand whiskey. Originally, four sculpted angels above the door greeted visitors to the saloon; the angels are now gone. The upstairs is said to have secret passageways and doors in the walls with benches where the ladies of the evening would hide out during police raids. The Climaxs basement nightclub facing Printers Alley, known as The Embers Showcase since the 1980s, has reportedly featured legendary entertainers such as Johnny Cash, Jimmy Hendrix, Ray Charles, and the Dixie Chicks. The Climax is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and will soon be redeveloped as part of a 6-story, 160-room luxury hotel.
