Locke is a fascinating film, both as a formal exercise and for its exploration of how truly distinctive rectitude is these days. I was struck repeatedly by the title characters ability to maintain his purposefulness while dealing with what I would have found to be an utterly infuriating epidemic of irrelevant preoccupation infecting everyone he has to deal with. A consummate multitasker in a world where ADHD seems to run riot, he is bent on doing the right thing despite innumerable obstacles (perfectly symbolized by his maintaining his planned route through detour after detour). Unlike the many sole survivor films that have annoyed me so much (Cast Away, 127 Hours, Gravity, All Is Lost), Locke gives us a single character who, far from being cut off from humanity to deal with the elements on his/her own, cuts himself off from the elements so that he can deal, in as controlled and deliberate a manner as possible, with his own very real and very present subset of humanity. Tom Hardy, as Locke, and the cinematography, are both fabulous.
