Locked Out Someone last week wrote on Iriss Facebook page why complain, she can do so much? and yes in some ways its a true statement, Iris can do incredible things and Im sure she will do more in the future. A savant artist at an incredibly young age and in some peoples opinion she is a gift from God. I believe in all those things and we are all in awe of her beautiful gift that has travelled the globe, nevertheless it doesnt make her any less vulnerable to the world like every child that is on the Autistic Spectrum. Iris sees the world differently, with the help from experts in the field and her family Im sure she will manage and have a full and wonderful life but it will always be different. Not less, just different. We were reminded of this yesterday when foolishly my husband and I both got locked out of the house with Iris and Thula inside. The keys were tantalisingly close behind the glass on the window ledge in front of us and Iris was dancing in full view on the other side thinking this was a fun game. We tried in every way we could think of to get her to pick up the keys and post them through the letterbox to us, but no joy. She was easily distracted with the way her cape moved in the reflection of the mirror in the hallway and loved the feeling of my hand as I put it through the door. The message wasnt getting through, luckily we were saved by my parents and the spare key. I had never thought of practising this sort of request before and it showed me how if things are out of context, how difficult it is for her to comprehend our language. Instructions in their expected place such as, shut the fridge door said in the kitchen are easily understood without a second thought, but when presented in an unexpected manner the words it would seem are lost.
