Lois, in the LA Times! "I was an oddball. I started submitting stories to magazines when I was 10, and I started selling stories to magazines at 13. When I was a teenager, that’s how I got my extra money, by selling these stories. At 20, I wrote "Debutante Hill," my first book. I didn’t know what to do with it and I put it in a drawer for a couple of years. Then I saw “The Seventeenth Summer Literary Contest,” which was looking for a teen novel by somebody who was a first-time novelist. I sent it in, it got first place, and I got a prize and they published it. By the time it came out, I had one-and-a-half babies."
