Lola got an exam on her eyes today (due to cataracts) at a specialist. I was sick and very drained (being a woman is hard :P) so I didnt go. I regret it. They claimed they were going to mildly sedate her, but I think she got scared. When she came home she was really clingy and flinched when I touched her for the first couple times. I made sure to lay her on the bed and let her sleep it out on me a little bit. She wont eat, and wobbles while standing up. Its adorable, but Im mostly concerned instead. It must be really scary for her. Why do I think that? Apparently, she was really sweet until they sedated her. She started growling, which Im guessing a sign of her being scared and telling them to back off. Im going to call and ask be present while shes being sedated next time. I would really like to be present the entire time, but itll be a long process (about 3-4 hours). The doctor is a lady who talked intensively to my grandfather about the whole process and aftercare. I knew most of this material, but there could have been deviations because of Lolas specific eyes, or because it was a different clinic. We asked if we could have it done the week of spring break (two and a half months away). Of course, the doctor seemed pleased with the idea of having someone to baby the dog the week after and accepted. Ive decided already that she will be inside until fully healed, and Im going to disinfect her crate and bring it inside. Im worried. Shes going to have to wear a e-collar, which will probably be another possibly scary thing to introduce. Im considering buying one early and desensitize her to it, much like I did with muzzles. Grandpa (as usual), thinks Ive overcompensating. Has anyone had to go through surgery with a dog? I really dont want her to associate vets with being scared, so Im trying to do everything possible to make her comfortable before and after the procedure. What did you do? She will need eyedrops for the rest of her life, and until we do surgery she will need Flurbiprofen and Tropicamide drops 2 times each a day. And apparently, the three days before surgery she will need even more drops (Neo Poly Gram Soulation and Pred. Acetate). Afterwards, she will need even more drops afterwards to prevent inflammation in her eyes until they heal from the incision (est three weeks). Any ideas? Ive decided Im going to change where my bed sits (early so she can adjust), clean it the room, bring in the crate (cleaned), bring in a mat, and raise her bowls. Ive been considering rinsing the walls, but I feel Im overcompensating because infection is pretty uncommon. Thoughts? The vet said I could call and ask questions after grandfather mentioned I would be the primary caretaker, which I will do when they open tomorrow during lunch.
