London to Ferguson: Crowd protesting police racism tears down Parliament Square barriers (Nov. 26, 2014) One of the strange, probably one of the positive, consequences of globalization process, we all have begun to become the cosmopolitans. A local event in Ferguson, or what has been happening in Iraq or Syria to make influences on all of us. The paragraph below was not written by a theorist of globalization of the 21st century or by the New York Times columnist Thomas Freidman but it had been written by the first theoretician of global capitalism, Karl Marx: “The bourgeoisie has through its exploitation of the world market given a cosmopolitan character to production and consumption in every country. To the great chagrin of Reactionists, it has drawn from under the feet of industry the national ground on which it stood. All old-established national industries have been destroyed or are daily being destroyed. They are dislodged by new industries, whose introduction becomes a life and death question for all civilised nations, by industries that no longer work up indigenous raw material, but raw material drawn from the remotest zones; industries whose products are consumed, not only at home, but in every quarter of the globe. In place of the old wants, satisfied by the production of the country, we find new wants, requiring for their satisfaction the products of distant lands and climes. In place of the old local and national seclusion and self-sufficiency, we have intercourse in every direction, universal inter-dependence of nations. And as in material, so also in intellectual production. The intellectual creations of individual nations become common property. National one-sidedness and narrow-mindedness become more and more impossible, and from the numerous national and local literatures, there arises a world literature.”* Bu paragrafın Türkçeye şöyle çevirebiliriz: Burjuvazi, dünya pazarını sömürmek yoluyla tüm ülkelerin üretim ve tüketimine kozmopolitan bir karakter verdi. Gericileri büyük bir keder ve kahra boğarak sanayinin üzerinde durduğu ulusal zemini ayağının altından çekiverdi. Uzun bir zamandan beri kurulu ulusal sanayiler yok edildi ve hâlâ her gün yok ediliyor. Bunlar her uygar ulus için kurulması bir yaşamsal sorun olan yeni sanayiler -yerli hammaddeyle değil dünyanın en uzak köşelerinden elde edilen hammaddeyle çalışan sanayiler, ürettiği ürünler yalnızca yurtiçinde değil dünyanın her köşesinde tüketilen sanayiler- tarafından yerlerinden ediliyor. Yerli üretimle karşılanan eski ihtiyaçların yerine en uzak ülke ve bölgelerin ürünleriyle ancak giderilebilecek yeni ihtiyaçlar ile karşı karşıyayız.
