Long Day, Both Awesome and Scary We stopped at Waffle House for breakfast (yes, we liked it that much) and then hit the road. After five pretty uneventful hours of driving, we stopped at our special lunch spot -Lamberts Cafe, home of the “Throwed Rolls”. See, the story goes that, one day, the restaurant was so caked that the guy with the rolls couldnt get to a customer. The customer told him to throw him the roll, and he did, thus beginning a new tradition. Now, expert roll tosses rove with carts of warm rolls, lobbing them like footballs all over the restaurant. Okay, maybe a little gimmicky, but Lamberts food is awesome and crazy inexpensive. And they have things you cant find elsewhere like hog jowls and fried chicken livers & gizzards. And servers walk around with buckets of sides like fried okra, fried potatoes, macaroni & tomatoes, black-eyed peas, and so on. Add to that drinks in 32 oz cups, and youll get an idea of huge this meal was. The six and a half hour trek to Pigeon Forge was made VERY scary by the presence of homicidal logging tucks, people merging onto the highway at top speed, and Google Maps decision to send us on dark, winding side roads for miles. When we pulled off onto the main drag of Pigeon Forge, it was stunning…from dark woods to a small Las Vegas strip! Our motel is adorable, with bear-themed blankets and pillow-cases, hardwood floors, and the nicest front desk staff I think Ive ever met at a hotel. They offered Krispy Kreme donuts, coffee, popcorn, cookies…when I wondered where the cookies were from, they smiled. “We baked them.” All this, and a pool that pretty much stays open all night. Fantastic! After a swim, we crashed hard. Ill tell you about our Pigeon Forge day next time.
