Long day yesterday. Justin did not have a good experience in PICU - TopicsExpress

Long day yesterday. Justin did not have a good experience in PICU for whatever reason. The Precedex apparently didn’t sedate him well, and the Fentanyl IV did absolutely nothing. At one point, the charge RN from the floor he had been on on Monday went to return some equipment and heard him screaming. He thinks that PICU is also not used to big patients with cancer. We got out to the same room with the same nurse yesterday about 3, but by that point, Justin was really hurting and was full of anxiety. The chest tube was hurting which made him scared to take deep breaths. I have never seen him like this even after his major leg surgery. I think he was also unprepared for all the pain of the chest surgery too. All that combined for a miserable Justin, a frustrated Mommy, and an angry Robby. Dr. Ghisoli responded immediately to the nurse’s call for better pain control, and he called in Dr. Smith, the anesthesiologist. He looked at Justin, talked to us a little, and ordered IV Toradol and IV Tylenol around the clock. They are also adding another pain medicine in hopes that we can get him off the pain patch eventually. As we go up on the patch to handle his pain, he gets more sedated and loopy. It is very important to all of us to get his pain under control before we start trekking home. Robby and I stayed with him last night until 11:30, except for stepping out for supper and to get Justin something to eat. He ate 6 chicken nuggets. Because he was not breathing deeply all day, his lung sounds got really diminished, so we got concerned about developing pneumonia. Once he ate a little, we convinced him to do some deep breathing exercises and sit up on the side of the bed. This morning when we got here, I noticed no heart monitor and no chest tube. Yay! He’s mad at me though because I wasn’t here to hold his hand when they removed it. He looks much more comfortable, so the added meds must be working. He is currently dozing.
