Long gone are the days when biblical Christians could expect the average church congregation in America to be built around the explicit, God-given charge to worship Christ and feed His sheep. The gospel message of a humanity deserving and precariously positioned on the verge of a holy God’s wrath has proven far too uncomfortable for, well, practically everyone, so, quite obviously, it had to be shelved until it could be properly…um…modified. You see, an unvarnished, undiluted biblical message epitomizes, as nothing else quite can, the modern unpardonable sin of being “not very marketable.” Nope, that whole “complete depravity of fallen man” and “all are deserving of Hell and in need of the Savior” routine doesn’t play very well to those who are…you guessed it…depraved, deserving of hell, and in need of the Savior. In Bible terms (when we bother with such things), these folks are known as “goats.” These goats are, according to Scripture, at war with God and in active rebellion against Him. They are also now officially the tip-top target audience of most of the professing church in America. Yessiree, church in most places across the country these days is all about the goats. This is not your grandfather’s Christianity. And what about that whole “feeding of Christ’s actual sheep” thing? Fuhgeddaboutit. If it makes the goats uncomfortable—and sheep food (aka: the depths of Scripture) always will—then it simply has to go. Remember: we’re goat-focused here, and until those goats sprout wool and start to baa convincingly, all of our attention will, out of necessity, be aimed squarely and completely their way.-Scott Alan Buss
