[Long post, forgive me] Late night, summer, the room dark, the fan, that impassive and revolving valve, spinning in the window, stirring the warm, close air with calm persistence, the frame of mind induced to listen, once more with the years, to Springsteens Thunder Road. Does anyone one else have such moments of heightened communion with certain songs? As Kyle Sarofeen and I have discussed several times (once, I recall distinctly, while listening to a bands cover version near midnight at a crowded Camerons [now closed] in Gloucester), such a powerful song. For me the song not only captures something of the essence of what it felt like to grow up in the 1970s and 80s, but more generally conveys something timeless and elemental about being young, the intense and fleeting, often fevered, thrill of youth. The lyrics contain some striking lines and images, words that together with the cascading music and the inimitable delivery ascend to brilliance. The screen door slams Heard that countless times over many summers at houses large and small all across Cape Ann. ... youre thinking / That maybe we aint that young anymore Felt that once in a while in my late teens, moreso now. Throw roses in the rain ! There were ghost in the eyes / Of all the boys you sent away Cuts to the core. What might have been lingers in unrealized twilight. And in the lonely cool before dawn !!! And You can hide neath your covers / And study your pain And Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
