Long status alert: I stopped to admire a dog on the sidewalk - TopicsExpress

Long status alert: I stopped to admire a dog on the sidewalk outside of Central Park earlier and ended up having a conversation with the man walking him. I dont typically engage in these sort of talks, but in the last year of living in NYC Ive noticed that the conversations I have with strangers ultimately end up being those of which I never forget. This man was familiar with KY & used to work in publishing. After already telling him I was here working with children, I was excited to tell him I was also working towards publishing my own work someday. He then said to me, Why would you come to New York to do that? You were better off staying in Kentucky. Theres a million other people here doing the same thing, and on any given day a publisher will read 50-100 manuscripts. The only thing worse is trying this in say, Los Angeles. If I were you, Id just be a teacher or whatever it is youre good at cause youll probably end up being upset with this goal of yours. Not just in this city, but in general; dont get me wrong, you seem intelligent, but youre what we call a nobody in this situation. Weirdly, I was filled with happiness, shook his hand & asked his name. People such as this man do the opposite of upset me, they encourage me & make me want to accomplish dreams (even the silliest ones) and I hope those of you with your own silly dreams adopt this theory. I feel confident that someday, Ill not only publish a book, but I will dedicate it to Keith, the ex-publisher-turned-dog-walker, and I will thank him. With upmost gratitude, A Nobody. :)
