One of the most inspiring images after typhoon #Yolanda was a picture of young people playing a half-court basketball game amid the ruins of Tacloban City. This image depicts not a desire to escape reality but rather the profound role that sports can play in a distressed people’s rise from loss. Our world boxing champion and “Pambansang Kamao,” Manny Pacquiao also took to the ring, carrying with him the hopes and sufferings of the Filipino nation. Typhoon survivors watched their champion in action, and for a moment, the sporting arena bestowed more than entertainment. It gave people the most powerful of agents – hope.
