Yeah, this ish is about to get ugly. What we do know about the shooter: this dude was clearly troubled. We seem to forget that what started it all was an act of domestic violence against his girlfriend. Was he mad about policing? Based upon his internet posts, yep. But was this part of a gang conspiracy? How does the NY Daily News know? That is all circumstantial at the moment. Another glaring contrast between this and the cases where black people are killed by police: We are urged to wait for all of the facts and the conclusion of official investigations before casting judgement (we know he did it. Im not insinuating that.). In this case, the media, people like former NY Gov. Pataki, and the NYPD wants to try to tie this dude to nonviolent protesters, gangs that have roots in the Black Power Movement, anything political to discredit the larger #BlackLivesMatter movement. Yes, yesterdays killings of the officers was terrible. Thats obvious. But while political and police leaders will call for us not to politicize yesterdays event, they are going to use the shooting to construct and advance their own narrative about the movements (il)legitimacy. Calls by them not to politicize yesterdays shooting is actually a political move.
