Looking back over the time we’ve muddled through with a jagged Hannah-shaped hole ripped in our hearts, we all agree on one thing: She changed us. Why does it seem like the time has literally crawled by but when we look at a calendar, we wonder, “Where did it go?” Simply put, 10 days were the most eventful we could imagine. Forced into horrible circumstances, we crammed the most precious life into 10 days. Start to finish. Life’s first cry to death’s last breath. 10 days. Every dream, nightmare, hope, and crisis shoved into 10 of the longest days to ever fly by in a whirlwind of emotional highs and devastating lows. She changed our world – her world- in about 240 hours. She was impossible. Yet, we touched her. She was real. She had a destiny. The fight in her was bigger than any of us could fathom. She was fierce. We are broken. As the days progress, we find ourselves making decisions differently, treasuring friends more, speaking with more kindness, acting with more compassion, holding each other closer, and living with the kind of determination that reflects her sheer tenacity. The cruel fact of the matter is that we will never know what her purpose in life really was. We’ll never know all she could have accomplished. Nothing can fill her void. It’s so much bigger than she was. When we see a pretty little dress, or a bow, or pink gingham, we’ll cry for what seems to be no reason. We have a reason. It’s because we’re different now. There is one less of us. Part of our family was torn from our story as the shortest and longest chapter of our lives was written all at once. We will never understand why but we all know how she changed us forever and 10 days was all it took. As the days creep or fly by, depending on the moments as they pass, our hearts will carry echoes of Hannah… June 20, 2014-June 30, 2014
