Breaking story from my blog post: bit.ly/1rKjZ1a ALDERMAN REY COLON IN JANUARY 2014: FORCE SCHOOLS TO COMPETE, CLOSE STRUGGLING SCHOOLS CHICAGO - In recently released audio Alderman Rey Colon expresses support for school closures and treating public schools like a private business. At the January 2015 regular meeting of the Chicago City Council a group of Alderman introduced a resolution calling for an end to charter expansion in the wake of record school closings. Following the meeting Colon spoke with Radio Chamba on Chicago’s WLUW, 88.7FM, and said: I believe it’s important to have competition in education... if [schools] are not educating children, they should be closed. Colon dismissed parent concerns on charters as a campaign by the unions. Our childrens schools shouldnt be forced to compete for resources said Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, candidate for 35th Ward Alderman. The last thing our children need is more school closures and a dog-eat-dog approach to public education. All of Chicagos children deserve fully funded public schools, with smaller class sizes, wrap around services, and a well-rounded curriculum.
