Looking for an amazing getaway a sort distance from Europe? Plan a trip to #GranCanaria, the second largest of the #CanaryIslands. This diverse destination will leave you inspired and in awe of the natural beauty the island holds. Gran Canaria lives up to its’ nickname, Little Continent, boasting tons of different climates all jam-packed onto this small island. You can explore long beaches, sand dunes, lush greenery, tiny villages and more. Gran Canaria holds a UNESCO Site, the Biosphere Reserve which; takes up almost one third of the islands’ land space and many other natural protected spaces. Of the 146 protected sites in the Canary Island, Gran Canaria holds 33, making it the second most protected island in the chain. You will love this little gem off the coast of Africa alive with nature and tons of culture to enjoy. Capital City Spend some time exploring the capital of Gran Canaria, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This interesting and historical city has many museums, cathedrals, plazas, restaurants and more to wander through. Las Palmas was the first stop for Christopher Columbus when he returned from America on his historical voyage around the globe. Two spots commemorate this moment in time and are worth a visit, the Hermitage of San Antonio Abad, Gran Canaria’s first ever church dating back to the 15th century and Casa de Colon. Look for these plus plans stops at Mueso Canario, Plaza del Espiritu Santo and the Cathedral by the same name. Man on the Moon Fancy a walk on the moon without leaving the earth. A must whiel visiting Gran Canaria is a wander around Roque Nublo in Tejeda. Roque Nublo is an impressive rock formation in the small town of Tejeda surrounded by a lunar like landscape of rocks. Just over an hours drive from the coast, this little town is out of this world, or will make you feel that way. Tejeda rises up out of the clouds and its’ natural beauty appears for you to discover. Be sure to pack your hiking shoes so you can spend some decent time wandering around this amazing place. Island desert One of the many amazing natural habitats on the island is found at the Maspalomas Natural Dune Reserve. Located in the southern area of the island in the town of Maspalomas, this amazing place is a wonder to discover. The dunes are immense, impressive and inspiring. Walk along the high, thin points of these mountains of sand and then ski down on foot. The area is not only made up of the incredible dune field but is also home to a pond and palm grove. These three ecosystems existing together is unique to Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands. Volcanic exploration Another fascinating spot on Gran Canaria is the Bandama Natural Monument or the Caldera de Bandama. A caldera looks somewhat like a cauldron and is formed when land collapse due to a volcanic eruption. Have no fear, the collapse has already occurred and has left behind this natural beauty to view. There is a steep but short walk to the bottom of the caldera. Along the walk you will see a variety of volcanic ash, floral and fauna unique to the Canary Islands. Have a wander around the rim up top at the view-point as well and peer down to the cauldron below. Created by Lynn May Gosselin.
