Looking for ways to keep the budget balanced in South Euclid, the City Council Safety Committee, which I chair, became aware of more than a half-million dollars in unpaid EMS debt. Looking to balance collecting debt from our residents and non-residents with keeping people out of medical bankruptcy, our committee is working on legislation to authorize the mayor and fire chief to enter into a contract with the Ohio Attorney General to collect some of that debt while alerting EMS debtors that they may qualify for debt forgiveness based on their incomes. Our next Safety Committee meeting will be before our November 24 Council meeting. We expect to have the resolution on third reading by December 8.
