Lord Lugards description of the Yoruba every Yoruba should be proud of but the Igbos think it is an insult: Paragraph 1: Lagos has for 20 years opposed every Governor and has formented strife and bloodshed in the hinterland…; Paragraph 2: I have spent the best part of my life in Africa; my aim has been the betterment of the natives for whom I have been ready to give my life...; Paragraph 3: But after some 29 years, and after nearly 12 years as Governor here, I am free to say that the people of Lagos and indeed the westerners are the lowest, the most seditious and disloyal...; Paragraph 4: The most purely prompted by self-seeking money motives of any people I have met.” -Lord Frederick Lugard 1916 I have arranged Lugard comment above into four paragraphs. In paragraph 1, Lugard said: Lagos has for 20 years opposed every Governor and has formented strife and bloodshed in the hinterland…; Lugard was right here. The moment the Yoruba realised that their trading partners, the Europeans of which Britain was number one, were enslaving and colonizing the Yoruba people, they quickly rejected the appointment of whites people as Governors over any Yoruba province. They fought and killed several white Europeans throughout Lagos and Yorubaland hinterland. In like manner, the Yoruba fought Gambari from 1959 until 1999 and today Gambari cant regain the presidency of Nigeria without the support of the Yoruba. The Yoruba also ensured the Igbos were defeated after they claimed to be fighting the Gambari but were bombing and killing the Yoruba people. Today, the Igbo are irreverent in the scheme of things in Nigeria. In paragraph 2, Lugard said: I have spent the best part of my life in Africa; my aim has been the betterment of the natives for whom I have been ready to give my life...; Lugard lied here. He and other colonial thugs came to Africa purposely to enslaved and colonized its inhabitants and not for their betterment. As far back as 1905, the British colonial thugs were exploiting bitumen from Ondo to build roads in England. If they were in Africa for the betterment of the natives, they would have used the bitumen in Yorubaland to build the roads for the natives benefits. In paragraph 3, Lugard said: But after some 29 years, and after nearly 12 years as Governor here, I am free to say that the people of Lagos and indeed the westerners are the lowest, the most seditious and disloyal...; Lugard called the Yoruba the lowest, the most seditious and disloyal simply because the Yoruba rejected outright minority white rule over them and incited rebellion against the authority of the white minority rule throughout Yorubaland. It is on record that the Gambari asked the white to continue to rule over them whilst the Yoruba were demanding for self rule in 1956. Yoruba are the bravest of the people out of Africa. The Yoruba confronted the British colonial thugs and sent them away from Yorubaland after 200 years. We also confronted the Gambari and sent them away from the presidency of Nigeria after 50 years. We are right now confronting Jonathan and in due course, we are the #OoduaRepublic generation. And lastly in paragraph 4, Lugard said: The Yoruba are most purely prompted by self-seeking money motives of any people I have met.” An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, generally referred to by its shortened title The Wealth of Nations, is the magnum opus of the Scottish economist and moral philosopher Adam Smith. First published in 1776, the book offers one of the worlds first collected descriptions of what builds nations wealth and is today a fundamental work in classical economics. Through reflection over the economics at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution the book touches upon such broad topics as the division of labour, productivity and free markets and sees individual purely prompted self-interest as motive for the growth and development of nations. Lugard was therefore right that the Yoruba are most purely prompted by self-seeking money motives of any people. This is the reason for the Nature and Causes of the Wealth, Growth and Development of the Yoruba nation. The more reason Yoruba farmers would plant more than enough crops for self sustenance and sold the rest for money. The Yoruba goldsmiths, for self-seeking money motives provide his services in return for money. In politics, the more reason MKO Abiola, rejected money and gave up his life for the democracy we now enjoy in Nigeria.
