The children, steeped in Hitler Youth ideologies, make a terrifying journey across their devastated country to be with their grandmother. In danger from American and Russian troops, the children are joined and aided by a young Jewish refugee from Auschwitz. Paradoxically, to a backdrop of the Black Forest, beautiful and ethereal, nightmarish and fairytale, the film gives a uniquely inverted view of the fallout from WW2. Lore, coming of age faces the terrible consequences of all she has believed in.
