Loretta and Laurie, heres my story Forever that didnt make the cut. Thanks for your support! Laurie Id love to read yours! As she was awakened by the sunrise announcing a new day, she shut her eyes tight and tried to ignore the not so distant murmurs and loud humming of machines nearby. She imagined she was lying in her bed, her fiancées arms wrapped tightly around her while she hugged her belly as if to protect the little miracle inside of her. The faint cry of an infant nearby brought her back to reality; it was like being sliced with a knife’s sharp edge. The cry wasnt his. Shed never heard his cry. It had been weeks since she held him in her belly, hed never been in her arms. She quickly dried the tears streaming down her face. If only she could have kept him inside her, hed be forever safe. She closed her eyes, remembering the first time she saw him from across the operating room. He was angelic. Her body ached, her mind was foggy; a combination of stress and lack of sleep. As she stood up from the stiff chair that had become her bed, she cringed holding her stomach. Her incision not quite healed. She still couldnt get to him fast enough. Their eyes met as she got to his tiny crib and the world around them disappeared. She adjusted his breathing tube ever so gently, careful not to touch the incisions on his belly. Her fingers caressed him softly. Only stopping when his small hand wrapped around her finger. Her pain was melting away, while her heart was about to explode. NICU life was hectic. In just a few moments doctors would come by to assess him, nurses would do his cares, his daddy would bring visitors in and out. But for now she had him to herself and this was rare. Before she knew it their alone time was over. Doctors cautioned baby boys condition was not improving. He was 3weeks old and had already had more surgeries than most would experience in a lifetime. His liver was failing, medications only making it worse. Nonetheless, they decided it was time to have his breathing tube removed. She sat nervously in her makeshift bed, her fiancée at her side. Together they experienced the most beautiful sound theyd ever heard, his cries were like the song of an angels choir. Shed waited forever and a day for this moment, she feared it may never come, but here it was. She finished wiping away her tears as the nurse placed him in her arms for the very first time. Once again the world disappeared. He was still extremely sick. She didnt know if he would make it; theyd be sent to another hospital soon. She was aware there was a long, difficult, journey ahead of them. And she swore shed never leave him. But right now none of it mattered because he was finally in her arms. And at this moment, even with everyone watching, they were all alone. In this moment, together they would share forever.
