Los Angeles Bike Lanes Video Sampler: The Kinda Good, the Pretty Bad and the Downright Ugly (2:48 video) A few video snippets of the variety of bike lanes I encountered today on my ride to and through Downtown L.A. and beyond: vimeo/114317245 0:00 Milled to oblivion Narrow Edge BL (NEBL) and acrobatic gutter pan cyclist 0:21 2-ft BL with 3-ft gutter pan 0:57 Door-zone BL (DZBL) 1:13 Narrow Edge BL (NEBL) 1:34 Left-Buffered BL (LBBL) 1:44 LBBL parking obstruction 2:04 Right-Buffered BL (RBBL) 2:30 Door-Zone BL (DZBL) parking obstruction By the time I got to the never-seen-before green-edged bike lanes on Spring Street, my GoPro batteries were spent. :( Although it looked quite odd, I found that I really didnt mind much the 2-ft BL next to the 3-ft gutter pan as the seam between them was smooth and the total of 5 feet is a foot better than you get on most edge bike lanes. I also didnt mind the Left-Buffered BLs--I just pretended they were Right-Buffered BLs and rode between the BL and the buffer, which kept me out of the door zone and gave me comfortable space from passing motorists. I continue to detest DZBLs, especially those on busy 4-lane and wider arterials. I now await Bob Shanteaus comments on everything I did wrong in the videos. :)
