Lost Legend: It was 24 years ago today (Feb. 8) the man who gave the world the 1960s pop hit “Runaway” bid it adieu. Del Shannon, born Charles Westover in Grand Rapids, Mich., was 56 when he committed suicide. He was a carpet salesman in Michigan when he and his band were playing a gig and they ad-libbed an unusual chord sequence that became the foundation for “Runaway.” Just prior to his death, word on the street was Shannon was going to take the place of the late Roy Orbison in the group The Traveling Wilburys, according to HISTORY.
