Lots of folks are probably following the news of a coming blizzard - TopicsExpress

Lots of folks are probably following the news of a coming blizzard to the Northeast tonight, and no doubt it’s going to be a doozy. But I doubt it will equal the “Great White Hurricane” that struck the same region on March 12, 1888. In that blizzard, snow piled up to 60 inches in some places and left approximately 400 people dead. Unlike today, weather forecasting was a thing of the future, leaving people completely unprepared for what was coming. In New York City, 15,000 people were stranded on the elevated trains, and drifts piled up to the second story of many buildings. People were caught without food, coal, wood, or any means of communication. Telegraph, water, and gas lines were knocked out all across the Northeast. Hopefully, the impact tonight won’t be anything like 1888. All of the following photographs were shot in New York City.
