Louis Delgrès of Guadeloupe lived from 1772 - 1802. He was educated in France. He fought during the French Revolution and served with such distinction that he was promoted to the rank of Colonel at the age of 27. Delgrès later joined the Blacks revolting in Guadeloupe after Napoleon decided to re-enslave the island in order to raise money for his European conquests.
